7 Lifesaving Packing Tips

Packing and moving is something that a large majority of people dread. Whether it’s packing for a vacation or planning towards storing your belongings at a storage facility, it’s hard to know where to start.

So today we’re going to share 7 lifesaving self storage packing tips!

1. With white goods like freezers or fridges, make you clean and dry them before leaving them in a storage unit. To avoid any nasty mould and maintain general freshness, leaving the doors slightly open is a huge help too.

2. This is a well known thing to do, but individually wrap your fragile items with packing paper of some sort. Some say that newspaper can potentially stain your goods so try to stay away from that. Fill gaps in your boxes with extra padding of some sort, whether that’s a bunch of bubble wrap or just more paper. This will really limit how much your fragile objects can move within their boxes when transporting them to and fro.

3. Placing rubber or disposable plates between your fragile dishes is a great way to store more and protect your goods at the same time.

4. When it comes to larger, flatter items like mirrors or paintings, have some kind of wrap on them but also store them upright to avoid damaging any of your beautiful art pieces.

5. Your electronics can be quite sensitive to heat, moisture and mean words. First of all, having a climate controlled unit can go along way with preserving expensive electrical gear. If you’re anything like me, you keep boxes from gadgets 15 years old. If you’re lucky enough to harbour this questionable habit, repacking your goods in their original boxes is great, and especially convenient for spacing.

6. Plan ahead! It doesn’t need to be said but it would be in wisdom to think ahead and all the things you need to store and figure out how you will structure your unit. For example, if there’s things you know you will probably need sooner than later, it’s good to store them towards the front of the unit. At the same time, generally speaking you want to stack and store the your bigger items towards the back of your unit. You’ll also thank yourself leaving some sort of a walkway in between all of your things..

7. Wiping metal items with a few drops of oil can saving you a finding rust covered goods after a few months of neglect.

We hope at least one of these tips will help you the next time you need to pack your things and move. We wish you the happiest of packing!
